Natale di Roma

Born 2,773 years ago today by Romulus, Rome sits quiet on her birthday. Thought I’d share these videos we enjoyed watching today as we think of her.

Long Lost Spaghetti Photos

I just came across these baby photos of Rafa's (probably first dish of) pasta!
Appropriate seeing how they both can't get enough of it these days in Italy.

Christmas on the Road - Alsace

We met up with Sisto's best friend from Santa Monica who moved to Germany, Leon. Both families met on the German/France border and spent a few days wandering the small towns, visiting old castles, sampling the wine and searching for snow.

Christmas on the Road Vienna

Catching up on the blog, I’ll start with our Christmas holiday. We left Rome for Vienna, where we spent our first few days wondering the city and enjoying food and sights. We learned it hasn’t snowed for Christmas in five years, just cold rain. We kept dry and enjoyed stopping at every opportunity to have gluwein while wondering through the many markets all over town.

We spent Christmas watching a children’s opera at the famous opera house. A highlight for us adults was the food, the yummy treats, good coffee and of course, schnitzel.  The highlight for the kids, though, was having our hotel near an amusement park, The Prater. Kids got their first experience in a fun house and Rafa spent five minutes deciding whether to join Sisto on a little roller coaster. In the end, he said “ok I’ll go!” Half way through the ride, he started screaming so much I was not sure if he was having fun anymore. The ride ended with a huge smile; I think he was glad he did it but also glad it was over.

Venice

High waters require rainboots for the entire trip.

Pompeii

We'll be back to explore Herculaneum next but this was a great start to learning about how serious Mount Vesuvius was. It took some convincing that it wasn't going to erupt while we were there.

Chestnut Medieval Festival

Soriano nel Cimino is where the party was held. Chestnuts galore and neighboring streets vying for first place with completions they've been holding for a thousand years. Literally.

We stayed in a bigger town, Viterbo, which happens to have all things Sisto. (See photo) They have paid homage to Pope Sisto so there's a bar, a piazza, a street and a church!

Pizza for dinner

Explored part of the Appian Way in Umbria, then headed to the festivities!
